There is something special about a new school year. The hallways are quiet. Bulletin boards are clean. Classrooms smell of fresh paint and sharpened pencils. Lesson plans are full of anticipation. Teachers arrive with renewed hope, administrators dream of new possibilities, and students walk through the doors carrying expectations they often cannot express. Every August feels like a gift.
Yet before we begin preparing classrooms, calendars, schedules, and strategic plans, perhaps there is one question every Kingdom Education leader should ask:
Have I walked in the garden with God?
Genesis paints a beautiful picture before it tells the tragic story of the Fall. Adam’s greatest privilege was not tending the garden. It was not naming the animals. It was not exercising dominion over creation. His greatest privilege was walking with God.
Before God gave Adam responsibility, He gave him relationship. That principle has never changed. As Kingdom educators, it is easy to become consumed with responsibilities. Enrollment numbers. Budgets. Curriculum. Accreditation. Athletics. Parent meetings. Faculty development. Discipline. School improvement plans. These responsibilities matter, but they should never replace the One who called us into this work.
Leadership is strongest when it flows from intimacy with Christ. Psalm 119 reminds us repeatedly of the freshness and sufficiency of God’s Word. “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (Psalm 119:105) Notice that Scripture is a lamp for today’s steps. God does not promise to illuminate the entire school year in one moment. Instead, He faithfully provides enough light for the next step of obedience.
That is good news for every Head of School, principal, pastor, and teacher. You do not have to know every answer before the first day of school. You simply need to know the One who does. Every new school year provides a fresh opportunity to rediscover the joy of God’s Word. The Bible should never become merely another leadership resource on our bookshelf. It is the living voice of the Creator speaking into every decision we make. Every morning spent in Scripture prepares our hearts to lead with wisdom, humility, courage, and grace.
Kingdom Education has never been about simply producing successful graduates. It is about making disciples. And discipleship always begins with the leader. As this school year begins, resist the temptation to run before you have walked. Walk with God before you walk the hallways. Listen to His voice before listening to the noise around you. Open His Word before opening your email. Spend time in the garden before stepping into the classroom. Your leadership will never rise above your relationship with Christ.

A Kingdom Leader’s Prayer
Father, thank You for the gift of a new beginning. Before I ask You to bless this school year, help me first to draw near to You. Let Your Word refresh my heart, renew my mind, and direct every decision I make. Guard me from becoming so busy serving You that I neglect walking with You. May every conversation, every meeting, every lesson, and every decision reflect the character of Christ. Let those I lead see You in me before they ever hear me speak. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
The greatest preparation for the first day of school is not the perfect lesson plan. Tt is a fresh encounter with the living God.
